In 1930s Chicago, a lonely Frankenstein (Christian Bale) enlists a mad scientist Dr. Euphronius (Annette Bening) to create him a companion. They revive a murdered woman as the Bride (Jessie Buckley). She awakens with a fiercely independent spirit, igniting an explosive romance, a cross-country crime spree, and radical social change. It is not long before a sensitive detective Jake Wiles (Peter Sarsgaard) and his secretary Myrna Malloy (Penélope Cruz) are hot on their trail.
