Jasmila Žbanić

Director

Jasmila Žbanić was born in 1974 in Sarajevo. She graduated in theatre and film directing from the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo. Before she started making films, she worked in theatre, and in 1997, together with her friends, she founded the artists’ association Deblokada, through which she produced, wrote, and directed. Her first feature film GRBAVICA (2006), won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale and the American Film Institute Grand Jury Prize. The film QUO VADIS, AIDA? (2020) premiered in competition at Venice. The film won the Independent Spirit Award for Best International Film, European Film Award for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best International Feature Film and two BAFTA Awards. She directed the sixth episode of the acclaimed HBO TV series THE LAST OF US (2022). The Venice Film Festival showcased her TV series I KNOW YOUR SOUL (2023). Her latest film is the documentary BLUM – MASTERS OF THEIR OWN DESTINY (2024).
