Paweł Pawlikowski

Paweł Pawlikowski was born in Warsaw in 1957. He studied Literature and Philosophy in London and Oxford. He made many award-winning documentaries in the late 1980s and early 1990s, such as FROM MOSCOW TO PIETUSHKI (1990), DOSTOEVSKY’S TRAVELS (1991), SERBIAN EPICS (1992), and TRIPPING WITH ZHIRINOVSKY (1995). After documentaries, his focus shifted to feature films, the first of which were LAST RESORT (2000) and MY SUMMER OF LOVE (2004). Both films won BAFTA awards. In 2015, Pawlikowski made IDA, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. His film COLD WAR won the Best Director at Cannes in 2018 and got three Oscar nominations for Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Photography. His latest feature film FATHERLAND (2026) premiered at this year’s Cannes and won the Best Director award. He lives in Warsaw and teaches film directing and screenwriting at the Wajda Film School.
